Best BBQ in Birmingham, AL: 8 Pits Worth the Trip

Birmingham, AL · The Estate Journal

In Birmingham, you can smell supper before you see it: hickory smoke drifting over Southside, two minutes from our front porch beneath Vulcan.

The best BBQ in Birmingham, AL starts with Dreamland's ribs on Southside, then runs out to Rodney Scott's whole hog in Homewood, white-sauce chicken at Miss Myra's and the 1891 pit at Golden Rule in Irondale. Tea Olive & Azalea Estate puts a group of up to 24 a two-minute walk from Dreamland.

Barbecue is the easiest way to feed a crowd in this city, and it's the one meal nobody argues about. This guide covers eight pits we send guests to, grouped by style, with addresses, hours and the drive from the estate. It ends with a plan for a smoke-and-sauce Saturday and a few notes on feeding the whole house.

01 — Walk To DinnerDreamland, two minutes away

John "Big Daddy" Bishop opened the first Dreamland in Tuscaloosa in 1958. The Birmingham location sits across from Phelan Park on Southside, close enough that you'll smell the hickory from our porch on a quiet night.

Dreamland Bar-B-Que

  • 1427 14th Ave S, Birmingham
  • Sun–Thu 10am–9pm · Fri–Sat 10am–10pm
  • 2-minute walk

Order the ribs. That's the whole point of Dreamland, which calls itself the "Home of the Best Ribs on the Planet." The hickory-smoked pork and chicken are good backups, and the classic Southern sides and desserts make it an easy family-style order for a long table.

Insider tipSkip the parking hunt. Walk over around 5 on a Friday, before the 7 o'clock rush, and you'll get a table for a big group without waiting.

02 — Whole HogTwo pits, two traditions

Whole-hog cooking is Carolina and West Tennessee tradition, and Birmingham has two of the best practitioners in the South within a 15-minute drive of the estate.

Rodney Scott's Whole Hog BBQ

  • 2701 18th St S, Homewood
  • Daily 11am–9pm
  • About 10 minutes by car

Rodney Scott won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southeast in 2018, and his Homewood dining room serves the same South Carolina whole hog he learned to cook as a kid. Get the pulled pork, the smoked wings and a side of hushpuppies. The Homewood location switched to table service in 2023, which makes it an easy sit-down dinner for a big party.

Insider tipPair it with a stroll down 18th Street in downtown Homewood afterward. The shops and bars are a block or two away.

Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint

  • 3029 Pump House Rd, Vestavia Hills
  • Daily 11am–9pm
  • Live music 2nd & 4th Fridays, 5–8pm

Martin's brought West Tennessee whole hog from Nashville, and the meat smokes for 20-plus hours. Brisket, burgers, tacos and wings round out the menu, so it's the pick when your group has a few picky eaters. The patio and live music on the second and fourth Fridays make it a good early-evening stop.

Insider tipOrder a tray of wings for the table while everyone decides. Martin's is about 15 minutes south of the estate over Red Mountain.

03 — White Sauce CountryAlabama's own sauce

Alabama white sauce comes from Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q, which opened in Decatur in 1925. Bob Gibson mixed mayonnaise, vinegar and black pepper to coat his hickory-smoked chickens, and the idea spread south. Around Birmingham, two kitchens do it best.

Miss Myra's Pit Bar-B-Q

  • 3278 Cahaba Heights Rd, Birmingham
  • Mon–Sat 11am–7pm · Closed Sun
  • Family-run since 1984

In July 2026, The Takeout named Miss Myra's half-chicken among the 14 best barbecue chickens in the country, praising its crisp skin and juicy meat. Get the chicken in white sauce, a pork sandwich, deviled eggs and a slice of homemade pie.

Insider tipMiss Myra's closes at 7 and is closed Sundays, so make it a lunch stop. It's about 20 minutes from the estate in Cahaba Heights.

SAW's BBQ

  • 1008 Oxmoor Rd, Homewood
  • Mon–Sat 11am–8pm · Closed Sun
  • About 10 minutes by car

The original SAW's is a small Homewood storefront that locals guard like a secret. The smoked chicken with white sauce is the local favorite, and the pulled pork over stone-ground grits is the dish people drive across town for. The Carolina Burger, topped with pulled pork and slaw, is a meal and a half.

Insider tipSeating is tight. For a group of more than six, order ahead for pickup and eat on the porch back at the estate.

“Some cities have a barbecue style. Birmingham has a barbecue argument, and every side of it is delicious.”

04 — The Old GuardPits older than your grandparents

Two of Alabama's oldest barbecue restaurants sit on opposite sides of Birmingham. Both are worth a short drive for the history alone.

Golden Rule Bar-B-Q

  • 2504 Crestwood Blvd, Irondale
  • Est. 1891
  • About 15 minutes east

Golden Rule started in 1891 as a stop for travelers on the road between Birmingham and Atlanta, and it's widely called the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Alabama. The Irondale location carries that history. Order the hickory-smoked pork plate or the chicken sandwich, with sweet tea.

Insider tipIrondale is right off I-20, so Golden Rule makes a natural first or last stop for groups flying in or out of BHM, about 6 miles from the estate.

Bob Sykes Bar-B-Que

  • 1724 9th Ave N, Bessemer
  • Since 1957
  • Brisket on Wednesdays

Bob Sykes has cooked pork shoulders over a hickory coal fire in Bessemer since 1957, and its sauce has a loyal following of its own. Get the pork sandwich, the ribs or a chicken-stuffed baked potato, and don't skip the onion rings. Come on a Wednesday if your group loves brisket.

Insider tipBessemer is about 25 minutes southwest of the estate on I-20/59. Call ahead to confirm hours before you make the drive.

05 — Soul & SmokeAvondale's barbecue kitchen

SAW's Soul Kitchen

  • 215 41st St S, Avondale
  • Mon–Sat 11am–8pm
  • About 10 minutes by car

SAW's Soul Kitchen is the Avondale sister to the Homewood original, with barbecue sandwiches, burgers, rotating specials and banana pudding. It sits on 41st Street in the heart of Avondale, so it's an easy lunch before an afternoon at the neighborhood's breweries.

Insider tipBuild an Avondale afternoon around it. Our brewery and distillery trail starts a few blocks away.

06 — Feed The Whole HouseBarbecue for 24

For a big group, the smartest barbecue night is often a pickup order and a long table at home. Both houses at the estate have full kitchens, so one can hold the sides and desserts while the other becomes the serving line. Call your pit of choice a day ahead, give them a headcount, and send two cars to pick up.

Here's how we'd split it for a weekend: Dreamland ribs on night one (someone just walks over), a SAW's pickup of white-sauce chicken and grits for a lazy lunch, and Rodney Scott's on Saturday night as the sit-down dinner. Leftovers go straight onto the fire-pit table for a midnight snack.

07 — The PlanA smoke-and-sauce Saturday

  • 10:30 amCoffee on the porch, then drive east to Golden Rule in Irondale for an early pork plate at the 1891 original.
  • 12:30 pmHead back west to Homewood for a SAW's white-sauce chicken and grits, or wait for Miss Myra's in Cahaba Heights (it closes at 7).
  • 3:00 pmBack to the estate to rest. Pool table, porch rockers, a walk up to Vulcan for the view.
  • 6:30 pmDinner at Rodney Scott's in Homewood: whole hog, wings and a round of drinks.
  • LateBack to the porch and the fire pit, with a Dreamland dessert picked up on the two-minute walk home.

08 — Stay At The EstateYour walkable basecamp

Tea Olive & Azalea Estate is two side-by-side 1910 Craftsman homes on a private acre in Five Points South, a two-minute walk from Dreamland and steps below Vulcan. For a guys' trip or a big family, the Tea Olive House sleeps 16, with a pool-table lounge, a covered porch and a backyard fire pit under a 50-year-old pecan tree.
