Birmingham, AL · The Estate Journal
By the time the turkey comes out of the oven in Five Points South, Vulcan has caught the last orange light over Birmingham and somebody's cousin is already signing everyone up for the 5K.
Thanksgiving weekend in Birmingham runs Thursday, November 26 through Sunday, November 29, 2026, with a Thanksgiving morning 5K, the Civil Rights District, Vulcan at dusk, the Pepper Place market on Small Business Saturday, and the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa. Tea Olive & Azalea Estate sleeps 24 in Five Points South, so the whole family wakes up together.
Getting everyone to one city is the easy part. Keeping three generations fed, happy and under one roof for four days takes a plan. Here's ours, built day by day, with every stop checked against this year's calendar.
01 — Thursday MorningRun off the pie first
The City of Birmingham's Turkey Trot 5K & Family Fun Run is on the books for Thanksgiving morning at the Birmingham CrossPlex. It's a city-run event, which means the vibe is neighborhood, not competitive. Strollers, grandparents and teenagers who swear they'll beat their uncle all fit.
Turkey Trot 5K & Family Fun Run
A 5K plus a shorter fun run for kids, hosted by the City at the CrossPlex on the city's west side. It's a short drive from Five Points South, so you're back on the porch with coffee before the oven needs attention.
02 — Thursday AfternoonA feast for twenty-four
Restaurants that seat 20 on Thanksgiving Day are rare and booked early. That's why most big families cook. At the estate you have two full kitchens across two houses, so the turkey can own one oven while the sides and pies take over the other. Nobody waits on a single oven timer, and nobody eats in shifts.
Set the long table in the Tea Olive House, which sleeps 16 on its own, and send the overflow next door to the Azalea House for naps and football. After dinner, the backyard fire pit and the 50-year-old pecan tree do the rest. If you're planning a full reunion around the holiday, our family reunion guide covers the who-sleeps-where math in detail.
03 — Friday MorningThe Civil Rights District
Black Friday crowds head to the malls. Spend the morning somewhere that matters instead. The Civil Rights District downtown is three stops on two blocks, and it's one of the best ways to give kids and grandparents the same hour of conversation.
Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute walks you through the movement in Birmingham with galleries that take about an hour and a half at a steady pace. Children in third grade and below get in free. Across the street, Kelly Ingram Park (open daily 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) holds the memorial sculptures, and 16th Street Baptist Church stands at 1530 6th Avenue North.
04 — Friday AfternoonLet the kids run
After a museum, little ones need grass. Railroad Park is a long green stretch along the tracks on the south edge of downtown, open every day of the year from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Walk the loop, let the kids roll down the hill, and watch the freight trains slide past the skyline. It's minutes from the estate, so you can split the group: walkers stay, nappers head home.
05 — Friday NightVulcan at dusk
Vulcan Park & Museum
The estate sits right beneath the world's largest cast-iron statue, so the trip up Red Mountain is a short one. Vulcan Park & Museum keeps the grounds, museum and observation tower open until 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Go up at sunset and you'll watch the whole city light up below you, including the street you're staying on.
“Thanksgiving in Birmingham ends the same way every year: a porch full of people who didn't want to go home yet.”
06 — Saturday MorningPepper Place, shop small
November 28 is Small Business Saturday, and the best place in town to honor it is The Market at Pepper Place in Lakeview. It's one of the last markets of the year; the season wraps December 12.
The Market at Pepper Place
Alabama farmers, bakers and makers in one place, rain or shine. Grab breakfast as you browse, then fill a tote with holiday gifts for the people who didn't make the trip.
07 — Saturday AfternoonIron Bowl Saturday
Alabama hosts Auburn on Saturday, November 28, 2026 at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, according to the Crimson Tide's 2026 schedule. Tuscaloosa is roughly an hour west of downtown on I-20/59, which makes Birmingham the easy home base for a family split between both sides of the rivalry. Kickoff time is set by the networks closer to the game.
No tickets? Watch it at the estate. The Tea Olive has smart TVs throughout, the arcade room keeps the younger cousins busy, and Dreamland Bar-B-Que is a two-minute walk for a halftime run on ribs. If half the group is heading to the game, Van Go Luxe can take ten of you to Tuscaloosa and back in a luxury Sprinter, so nobody fights traffic or parking. See events & groups for details.
